September HSMAI Breakfast – Makarand Mody Airbnb Presentation

Location: The Langham, 250 Franklin St, Boston, MA 02110

Date: September 27, 2018

Time: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Airbnb has emerged as a disruptor to the hotel industry. Providing consumers with more choice when they travel, the company has initiated a series of strategic activities to compete more directly with the hotel industry. While not all hotels or destinations have experienced the impacts of Airbnb evenly, and pending regulation aside, there is evidence to suggest that hoteliers across the board must seriously consider the company among its list of key current and potential competitors.
Boston HSMAI will present the current state of the art research on how Airbnb is impacting the hotel industry in terms of its influence on hotels’ economic performance, the customer’s travel experience, and residents’ perceptions of home sharing in their neighborhoods. They will provide hoteliers with the holistic and relevant insights into this disruptive phenomenon and will also highlight what the industry can do to respond to this threat. The discussion will be situated in the context of the most relevant consumer insights–trends and themes–in an experience-driven society, highlighting how changes in how we live, work, and play impact how we travel.
