Demystifying the Digital Marketplace
As the ever-evolving Internet and new technologies continue to develop and grow, the hospitality digital marketplace is shifting for travelers and the industry alike, from the consolidation of traditional online travel agencies (OTAs), new booking platforms enabled by digital connectivity, and the intermediation of group sales to the monetization of search engines. It’s become clear that technology is the silent force of change and new advances are driving consumer behavior. These innovation disruptors have created strategic challenges that the hotel industry cannot ignore. It is critical that the hotel industry understands the trends and costs of the distribution revolution that is underway in order to leverage growth and effectiveness, consumer relationships and legislative action.

The HSMAI Boston Chapter continues to spread its influence around New England’s leading hospitality academic programs. In addition to our student membership at Boston University and Johnson & Wales University, we’re thrilled to welcome our newest HSMAI student chapter members at University of New Hampshire’s Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics. Advised by our Collegiate Relations Director Jon Moore, the UNH student chapter looks forward to a tremendous year ahead of collaboration and support of the parent professional chapter.
To learn more about how you can support our HSMAI student chapter growth initiatives, send a note to our President-Elect Greg Bodenair at firstname.lastname@example.org or our VP of Membership Tyler Smith at email@example.com.
Johnson & Wales University Senior Garners Internship and Networking Opportunities at the 2016 National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners Conference
Kombeh Ceesay, a senior in the College of Hospitality Management was one of 15 students representing colleges and universities from across the United States who attended the 2016 National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners (NCBMP) Conference in St. Louis, Missouri on November 30th-December 3rd.
While attending the conference Kombeh was one of four students recognized for her achievements and the only paid internship recipient. Kombeh will be interning at Signature Boston, the joint venture of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, The Boston Convention Marketing Center, and the greater Boston hospitality community.
Over the course of the year, the HSMAI Boston Chapter produces a variety of excellent local events. As members, you can attend these events at a significantly discounted rate. Along with that benefit, there are many other benefits to membership like weekly insights from sales, marketing, and revenue optimization experts, best practices and case studies from the industry’s top marketers, customer market and business knowledge from HSMAI programs, internships, job fairs, and participation in HSMAI chapter boards and programs and access to current hospitality resources, publications and educational program content to support and compliment academic course work.
It is with great sadness that HSMAI Boston marks the passing of legendary marketer Irma S. Mann, CHME. Ms. Mann was a member and great friend of HSMAI, particularly her local chapter HSMAI Boston. Over the years she would draw large audiences at chapter programs as well as serve as a sounding board for many chapter presidents.
As a marketing industry leader Ms. Mann was recognized by HSMAI in 1990 when she received the Albert E. Koehl Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advertising in the hospitality industry.
Ms. Mann was honored again by HSMAI in 1999 being inducted into the HSMAI Hall of Fame, which honors recipients for their “pioneering activities and active involvement in sales and marketing education, training, and industry advancement”. This recognition also made Ms. Mann an Honorary Life Member of HSMAI.
HSMAI Boston extends our condolences to her family, colleagues, and friends.
